3 Magazines

Project 3 Magazine

The 3 magazines I choose are XXL, Vibe and The Source; these are all leading hip hop magazines in the US. However all of the magazines are for sale in England. The 3 featuring artist in the magazines are TI, Lil Wayne and R Kelly. I choose these 3 because they have 3 different connotation and detonations.

Lil Wayne – The Source
Denotation

Lighting- The lighting is quite bright to catch his facial expression.

Photography-
* Lil Wayne gives a cocky mean mug photo shoot, which represent the new hip hop artist of today.
* His wearing a red cap and white T-shirt and the magazine cover is based around those colours.
*He has a photo which shows his tattoos on his face and this represent him being tough and rough for his image.

Connotation

Lil Wayne- representing the new attitude of hip hop in a new era. He represent the tough urban of hip hop, close up in the magazines you can see his tattoos

The Source

The source is the biggest Hip hop magazine in the US and what makes it different from other hip hop magazines, is that it has an authentic style that separates it from other magazine, it has years of legacy and history, covering every article know to hip hop. They provide the most in dept editorial content specifically focus on the hip hop culture and life style. The other reasons why people like to read the source is that they try to connect people from different generations and they try to see their artist more than just a musician or a young thug trying to make some money. Most of the artist today like Eminem, Notorious BIG, DMX and other artist where known through out the world because of the source and their unsigned hype article that there editorial staff created, they are know as the mind squad. Due to the source success it has been called the bible of hip hop by journalist covering the business. The source isn’t just a magazines when hip hop was know through out the world the source quickly followed with other things other than the brilliant magazines they published. They have created their own shows called the source TV show, made albums the source hip hop hits volume 1-10 and have their own award show called the source awards.

TI- XXL

Detonation

Lighting – The lighting is done from behind so you can just see the shadows on their foot.

Photography- T.I and his crew are all standing one behind the other but fan out so you can see their body and faces. The cover is based on what the artist are wearing it has a dark colour scheme, to make the front cover stand out. This is a simple front cover not a lot of flashy design or images but it still captivates the audience.

Connotation

T.I representing his crew for the people of America.
XXL

Since 1997, XXL has competed with hip-hop powerhouse magazines such as The Source and Vibe. It was founded by former Source staffer Jules Winnfield, as well as others who wanted to create a better magazine than The Source, which they felt was compromised because Benzino, a Boston, Massachusetts-based rapper and associate of The Source publisher David Mays, were believed to be influencing the editorial content and rating system. The magazine's editors have included Elliott Wilson and Datwon Thomas.
In December 2006, XXL took over the hip-hop producer/DJ magazine Scratch (another title owned by Harris Publications), rebranding it as "XXL Presents Scratch Magazine". It shut down in September 2007. Other titles with limited runs have also been launched under the XXL umbrella, including Hip-Hop Soul, Eye Candy Magazine and Shade45 Magazine.

R-Kelly- Vibe

The vibe magazine is known through as the definitive voice of urban culture. They influence people through out the world by their music, life and style. Vibe is an award winning magazine publishing entertainment, fashion, politics and culture. Vibe’s innovation, journalistic integrity, brand equity, and overall swagger make it the No. 1 reference choice among male and female trendsetters in small and large cities in the U.S. and abroad.
Detonation

Lighting- The picture lighting is dark all around this makes the main image stand out and makes the audience focus on it.

Photography- R-Kelly he shows the other side of the hip hop industry and tries to show all the problems and negative side of it. Again the font colour scheme mix with what the artist is wearing.

Vibe

Vibe is a magazine, launched 1993 by founder Quincy Jones. The publication predominantly features R&B and hip-hop music artists, actors and other entertainers. Issued monthly, the magazine's target audience is predominantly young, urban followers of hip-hop culture. Though hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons was rumored to be an initial partner, publisher Len Burnett revealed in a March 2007 interview that Simmons clashed with Editor-in-chief Jonathan Van Meter.
The magazine owes its success to having a broader range of interests than its closest competitors The Source and XXL which focus more narrowly on rap music or the rock & pop-centric Rolling Stone and Spin. It also differs from the more staid Essence, Ebony or Jet publications by attracting younger readers of many ethnicities. As of 2007 Vibe has a circulation of approximately 800,000. Advertisers run the gamut from record labels to Dolce & Gabbana to Cognac brands.
